  • Excessive Underarm Perspiration – Deodorants or Antiperspirants? | Posted by admin on May 14 2010
  • The most widely used remedy to stop excessive underarm perspiration is to use a deodorant or antiperspirant.  What’s the difference?  Will they really work?  Putting it simply – the antiperspirant reduces the sweat and the deodorant reduces the smell.  For some folks, the smell produced by excessive sweating is the major problem.  It’s bad enough that you may get drenching wet from sweat, but the smell is just adding insult to injury!

OK – Where does this rank smell come from?  Human sweat is basically odorless until it is fermented by bacteria. Bacteria thrive in hot, humid environments. The human armpit is among the most consistently warm areas on the surface of the body, and sweat glands provide the moisture, hence the perfect breeding ground for fermentation and smell.

This is what finally worked for me to tame my excessive underarm perspiration.

Here is an interesting fact:  When adult armpits are washed with pH basic soaps, the skin loses its normal acid characteristic (pH 4.5 – 6), raising the pH to become basic. Bacteria thrive in high pH or base environments. Creating such an environment in the armpit makes it more susceptible to bacteria production.   Deodorants are usually alcohol-based. Alcohol initially stimulates sweating, but may also “temporarily” kill bacteria.

Unfortunately, deodorants do little to combat the production of smelly bacteria; they just try to “cover them up” with an endless variety of fragrances.   Deodorants have never worked for me.  In fact I remember using some that seemed to make the production of smelly bacteria even worse!

Alright, what about antiperspirants?  Modern antiperspirants typically contain aluminum chloride, aluminum chlorohydrate, or aluminum-zirconium compounds.  Note that the active ingredient is aluminum, which has been shown to be toxic in humans.  There is still quite a bit of debate on the long term effects of Aluminum in humans, and I won’t go off on a tangent about that here, however I would suggest that you do a search on “Aluminum toxicity” to weigh the facts yourself, however The FDA warns that “people with renal dysfunction may not be aware that the daily use of antiperspirant drug products containing aluminum may put them at a higher risk because of exposure to aluminum in the product.” The agency warns people with renal dysfunction to consult a doctor before using antiperspirants containing aluminum.

Renal dysfunction is a problem with the kidney that reduces the body’s ability to adequately retain essential nutrients and clear out toxic substances from the blood.

How do antiperspirants reduce excessive underarm perspiration?   Aluminum based complexes react with the electrolytes in sweat to form a gel plug in the duct of the sweat gland. The plugs prevent the gland from excreting liquid.

So, are antiperspirants effective?  Well, if you reduce the sweat output, you will reduce the bacteria production as well, so this is the most widely used solution, but at what cost?  Remember the reference in one of my earlier posts to your body being like an engine that needs an efficient cooling system?  You are essentially plugging off part of your radiator when you jam up your sweat gland ducts.

Many people have also complained that using antiperspirants have caused them to develop allergic reactions, cysts, and redness.  I had this same problem several years ago when I was trying to find an effective antiperspirant that I could live with.

I’ve found a much better and safer way to control this underarm sweat problem.

The safe and healthy way to stop excessive underarm perspiration.
